Roger,
Try some of the so called 'clear' acrylic colours from Tamiya or Humbrol, either airbrushed or hand brushed. The smoke effect is quite good if painted reasonably thin.

Alternatively, you could thin the paint and dip the canopy into the thinned mixture, slowly withdrawing it and let it drain. It does work, trust me.

Nice one Ted, but I suppose that's why you're so good and i'm just a target builder ... ;D ... just you wait until I get that TBM started and get airborne mate!

As Rhino says, dippin is the way to go, my method is to "tint" some Johnsons Klear(Future) with some Tamiya smoke,& a drop of Tamiya clear yellow,& then dip the canopy as you would with pure Klear. Test on a scrap canopy first,to get the "right" tint. Oh, remember not to tint the back part(fixed to the airframe),every one of these i've seen is clear(but i am ready to be corrected )

The fixed part can be tinted, if you check out the gallery at F-16.net you'll find plenty of examples of tinted and untinted parts. To make matters worse, I have seen 2 seaters with a tinted front canopy and untinted rear canopy. The moral is to check your references.
