Need some advice - I am putting a Lysander together in 1/48 but I needs specific codes that are not on the decal sheet. I measured the letters and they are 17mm high - in 1/48 this equates to about 32", however I have looked on Hannants and they dont seem to do 32" high letters as a generic sheet. Have I got my sums wrong or are the decals themselves the wrong scale? Essentially I need to know what size letters I should get and where I can get them, by the way they are a kind of Grey colour. Apologies if I seem a little dim about this, but RAF is not my 'thing'.

Possibly Medium Sea Grey 28" which I recall (getting hazy) being sort of standard at one time. I do however stand to be corrected.

Cheers H
I have googled RAF Serial codes and came across a reproduction of an Air Ministry document outlining the letter codes vital statistics and it states that all fighter codes should be 48" high although narrow fuselages can have custom fit lettering so I am no nearer as yet. I know a Lysander is far from being a fighter but it is sort of fighetr sized so I guess it fits. If anyone has any idea, I would be grateful for some clues.

Yup, Lysander codes would be MSG (or red, for ASR & SOE work.) Size nominally 48" in 1939 because officialdom had only ever seen one aeroplane (probably a Heyford) in its life and thought they were all the same. Somebody should have shown him a Spit and a Hampden.
So - Which Lysander? Which Squadron? Where and when? What actual codes? I have a Lysander file nearly an inch thick and some odd size grey codes ..... but the odd clue would help! - B.

Bri I am trying to model a 1/48 Lysander from No 2 AC Sqn. code letters KO-T from France 1940. Managed to get myself an old Revell/Testors kit which is now complete, just need the right size of decal so I can source them. I assume I need the 48" letters but they are huge against the fuselage and much larger than the decals that came with the kit. Paul

Hi Paul,
According to the 4+ book on the Lysander codes were 36" high (they state the color as light grey).
If I measure the size of the codes and the size of the serials (8" on the actual aircraft) The assumption of 36" codes does not seem unreasonable (Codes are 4.5 times as large as the serial number).

That makes sense - I measured the codes that came with the kit at 17mm which equates to 36" in 1/48. Wasn't sure if my maths was right or not trouble, I have had trouble finding generic decalsfor sale at that size. Hoping that Colin S-K can come up with something in teh decal bank.
