I bought this kit earlier this year when i was feeling a bit flush! After an initial quick browse through the box it ws thrust to one side whilst i built a host of Mustangs for the Lincoln IPMS nationals display. With that lot now nearly finished and the Profile 24 Ford P68 back in its box and in hiding i need a new serious project so the BMW snuck from hiding and whispering sweet nothings to me placed itself upon the desk! The kit comes in Studio 27's usual large Red Box Within the box is a selection of lumpy resin bits, an etch fret, a nicely printed decal sheet and a range of White Metal bits. The instructions are printed clearly on good quality paper. Very close examination of the kits shows it to be a representation of not one but three cars. Unfortunately that is not a good thing. I can find elements of the aero packages from three different races from the first half of the season. The instructions choose to generally ignore the contents of the Etch fret. After three hours there are still parts I have not identified! I'm not pleased. This kit cost in excess of £100 and it is frankly inaccurate, poorly documented and not that well moulded. The White metal parts simply put are not up to the job of representing what is one of the more attractive cars from the grid of 2006. More progress if I can be bothered! H

This is what you get for not building trucks from scratch! ;D
Having said that, I reckon I deserve a share in the Plastruct Co!

Well never one to be defeated or to make my own life easy I've decided that I should really go to town and build this as best I can. I have a lot of reference pictures of the car as raced at the Hungaroring last August and coupled with the fact that it was at that race that Nick scored the teams first podium points I'm going to attempt to bring the kit up to the aero spec of that race. First things first the kit appears to represent a mix of pre season and round 1 (Bahrain) features mixed with a few odd bits possibly circa round 11 (France)! To convert the car to Hungarian spec requires changes to the nose wing, rear wing, side pod chimneys and vents, side pod wings, main barge boards and those added on winglets on the front of the side pods. I chose to start with a good look at what i had in the kit to begin with. The first point of call was the rear crash structure and wing mounts. As is common with most current genration F1 cars the drive shafts are encased in wing type fairings which exit either side of the rear and mount directly to the wheel/brake hubs. So i drilled out their location points and tacked them in place with tacky wax!. As can be seen there is quite a bit of work to do here as the wings are different chord and section and they have been cast with different mounting angles built in. I spent half an hour tack soldering a bead of solder along the trainling edge of the narrower wing and I'll reshape that tonight when it is hardened and cooled. I assembled a wheel centre next to see how they looked and I'm reasonably pleased with these. A little clean up and a coat or two of Alclad and they should be fine. Thankfully BMW added the wheel centre fairings later in the season. Whilst on the subject can anyone recommend an after market wheel nut to use on this and other kits I have as the cast WM ones in the kit are a bit on the undersized and poorly moulded side! This picture (taken from Gurney Flap) shows the area I'm working on all be it on the '07 car. I assume colours are broadly similar as this is one shot I can't get for an '06 car. I think this will be a slow build!

Not entirely sure how it is set up but the drives are in the front of the wings.
Just spent another two hours playing with them and got them a bit more like it. Should look a bit better when painted and carbon decalled.

In that small gap between the wings, at maximum depth where the shafts would be. You wouldn't believe the size of the clutch either....

Provided by a friend of mine. Taken at a BMW show event, this is a race chassis with 'sanitised' aerodynamics! I've also got about fifty of the rear suspension assembly removed from the car and gearbox which are NOT for reproduction which is a great pity cos Caz would love them. I'm talking to a mate who has just left Spyker to go to Ferrari about similar pictures but he seems strangly reticent about providing them!! <img src="/images/wink.gif" height=14 width=14> H
