Airfix are listing a 1:72 Sea Fury kit, anyone know what its lineage is? I don't remember Airfix doing one previously and at 4.99 it can't be the Trumpeter kit. I have a feeling PM Model did one a while back.... Aha...correction...Pioneer did one, I'm assuming it's that. ...unless you know different

Thats my understanding as well. If you can either sort out the shape issues with the leading edge radiators or live with them and are prepared to do a bit of extra detailing around the cockpit and wheel wells/undercarriage , the the kit is well worth a punt.

That creates a dilemma The Nimrod and Canberra B(I)8 decal sheets are crap, so I'm expecting the same for the Airfix Sea Fury. In which case... I'd probably be better off paying £3-4 for the Pioneer model rather than the £4.99 Airfix wants off me, working on the theory that the Pioneer decals can't be any worse. I did some searching for sea fury reviews and found that the trumpeter kits aren't that good for u/c and props. At £12 I wouldn't want to add any resin replacements. The Pioneer kit is looking a good option, if I close the cockpit I can get away with a lack of detail. Me thinks it's time to sit on the fence and let someone else buy the Airfix kit and then post a quick review somewhere on the web

Neil,
I think "PM" was simply another boxing of Pioneer; the same plastic. I built it many years ago, and iirc it was a very basic kit, but the only issues I recall were the shape of the area aft of the exhausts and very shallow wheel wells. There were some aftermarket decals available, probably long out of print but of course a hunt on Paul Davis' stand at a show may pay dividends ...

I assume PM stands for Pioneer Models, ergo both companies are one and the same. Of course I could be wrong... For £4, the kit seems good value, I can live with shallow wheel wells (I've seen pics of the model and they're certainly shallow!) as I'm not really bothered about the underside, you can't really see much unless you pick the model up. Decal wise I should be ok. Don't want to do a black/white striped model and the rest of the markings seem to be in black so I can use my laser printer to do them. If I close the cockpit up then I can get away with that area. Which only leaves me with the u/c, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it Just got to go and buy the thing now.... ;D

Aeroclub used to (may still) do an undercarriage upgrade for the PM kit. Oh and John's vac canopy really improves it a lot.

Aye, there's the dilemma, Aeroclub do a prop, u/c and canopy but if you add that lot to the price of the kit you get very close to the price of the Trumpeter or Special hobby kits, which are better quality overall. However, if you buy either of those then you still need to add the prop and u/c to those kits Maybe I should stick to simpler projects

I did a conversion of an old Frog Sea Fury many years ago, based upon an article in Finescale Modeller, where the modeller grafted many parts from a Matchbox tempest into the kit, primarily wheel wells, wing root intakes and a host of other bits. Yes i bought the aeroclub u/c and several other bits as well if I remember. Never built the PM kit, but I assume they must be similar, apart from the twin cockpit. The Frog kit, if you can get one is a good basis to start from, and I think Almark used to do a decal sheet for it. I think there is a rass set, maybe Aeroclub or Airwaves for the kit too. Could consider using any tempest bits too. All this said, i shall be buying the 48th scale Trumpeter kit soon. It will look god next to my Typhoon and Tempest models in the same scale. MUst look at a Hurricane for the full set methinks!!
