Hi All I've decided to have a crack at a PR.7 using the Airfix B(I)8. First job was to mark out the camera windows on the rear fuselage, I also marked out the position of the rear access hatch that Airfix have missed. The next job was to sort flare bay and forward fuel bay. I cut the bomb bay doors to the right length and glued the front part in to the fuselage to be filed and re-scribed later. I next removed the B.(I)8 nose, at this stage rather than cutting at the "transport joint" I did the cut 9mm further forward to accommodate the camera windows. Lucky I have a spare "B.2" nose from an Aeroclub B.(I)6. having done the cut where I did this left a BIG gap at the top and a smaller one under fuselage, I plugged this gap by using sections from the unused B.(I)8 nose. More soon (ish) John

John,
Brave step....
Will follow this with interest, having started PR7 from the Classic Airframes B2, like the PR3 that I have.
Looks like you may have some interesting filling/sanding coming up on that nose........

Hi Colin I'm hoping this is going to be essayer than the Classic Airframes B.57B in to a RB.57A that I did, but you never can tell

With the rear windows cut out it was now time for the 4 front windows, these windows have a square opening, but there is a circular aperture behind the window, this I did by punching holes in thin plastic card. I've decided to have the flare bay open so I've added some extra detail to the Airfix part Trial fit, it's starting to look like a PR.7. The flare bay still need some more detail, I'm building it as "Charley Hotel" of 100 Sqn. So I'm going to add the target banner hook.

I've added some detail to the bay, I've not gone mad, just enough to give an impression of busyness Next job was to add the parts I cut from the B.(I)8 nose to plug the gaps in the top and bottom of the fuselage, and glue it all together Next Job the nose!!

Hi Rolf Will do! This is a trial fit of the nose to the fuselage, it looks like it's going to be better than the RB.57A.

I wish! I still have around 25 Airfix, and about 10 of the others, Frog Matchbox etc. I will get at least one of the 1/48 kits and quite probably more of some kits than others, but I'd never get as many in 1/48.

More work on the Fuselage, this time it's the strengthening plate that was added to the B.6 PR.7 B(I)8's and PR9's, and not as most of the current profiles would have you believe all Canberra's. The the B.2 and it's derivatives do not have this plate i.e. PR.3 T.4 U.10 T.11 T.17 etc. The plate is just that, a quite thick sheet riveted to the outside skin(very British). This was done to strengthen the rear fuselage after the introduction of the more powerful Avon's, it was found that the extra power from the new engines was causing the rear fuselage to vibrate. It was not added on the production line for the PR.7's so check your photo's, I'm not sure when the mod. was done, but it must have been quite early on as I've not seen many PR.7's without.

Some early work on the wings, this is one of the places where the odd discrepancies in the level of detail shows, the wheel wells are quite nice, good rib detail, and the top side of the wing has the air brakes nicely engraved, but they are missing on the under side, also no landing light! The control surfaces have no trim tabs. I can't quite understand why this should be,Airfix have managed to get so much so right, and yet have missed some very simple things. Oh well nothing that can't be fixed. Adding the leading edge intakes to the wing, the PR.7 has 3 two inboard one outboard of the engines

John,
Looking very good, it's almost like watching a 'master class' in how to build a Canberra.
Am making notes for when I get round to do my PR7.
Look forward to seeing this in the flesh...
Colin
