I found this little gem recently at a vehicle rally and thought it would make a good 'What is it?' ... ... I know what it is, but talking to the folks who organised the vehicle rally, the history of the vehicle and how and where it ended up is a mystery. Maybe the number plate will offer a clue?

The number plate looks like it originated in Guernsey....right hand drive....1940s-ish....Lea Francis or a similar small British manufacturer?

Sorry Alfie, Lea Francis ... No. The number plate didn't originate in Guernsey, but the date is erm ... roughly there .. ish!

... now then Seb, can you guess where the car is? In your garage? and you're taking it apart, derusting it, restoring it, reassemble it??? Will it be ready for the SMW? Joking apart - was it for sale, how much did they want? (My dad used to have a 1935 Chevrolet and on the odd occasion he let me ride standing on the runningboard for a few hundred meters ... )

No Seb, I don't own it, it was sitting on display at a museum. I won't say where at the moment, let's leave folks guessing for a while, but it is the original number plate. I'm off to Beltring in Kent tomorrow morning for the 'War and Peace' show, I'll look in later tonight to see if anyone has guessed where the number originated.

It's a Hillman 16 Hawk like this one: www.motorbase.com/profiles/vehicle/picture.ehtml?i=1519972663;p=1113377301The number plate has been stolen from Guernsey as all the Channel Islands have exclusive use of a letter and a number to register their cars. Jersey is J###, Guernsey G###, etc. A UK mainland number was always 3 letters followed by a number as the letters related to the registration district that the car was bought in. Sooooo...if you're going to tell us different, then something underhand is afoot! ;D Alfie

OK, I'll come clean and fess up ... it's an Icelandic plate, not Guernsey, quite legal and original. I took several photos at the same meeting of Icelandic registrations, more when I get back from Beltring.
