Nice site, wonderful pictures of a genuinely eccentric railcar in fetching unlined pale blue. Thanks, Ian. So has the DVLA reached that far abroad with its new road tax scheme? Cheaper to put it on the rails.... It's a Skoda, 1950s Octavia type bodyshell but rather strange front grill. Any definitive ideas out there? There has got to be a 1/76th or 1/43rd replica of the car somewhere, something silly and totally inoffensive to put on tracks and bemuse others; especially railway fans. I just love the wheels, chrome trim and white walls, just what every 50's railcar needs. Very upmarket. Perhaps someone will do a London Underground Reliant Regal in a similar style? Mind you, in 1907 The County Donegal Railway bought an inspection car from Alldays and Onions (honest!) which they converted into a passenger-carrying railcar in 1920. It seated six passengers in some considerable intimacy as the body was 8ft 5in long and only 3ft 7in wide, a sort of coffin on four wheels. Ford engine (22hp), four speed gearbox and not very fast. The Skoda is sheer luxury by comparison.

Erm, I am having some doubts about the car so neatly converted to rail. My initial identification of it being a Skoda is not perhaps as certain as I at first thought. Whilst its body looks like a Skoda Spartak/Octavia of the 50s the bonnet and grill have a distinct air of Volvo P444 about them. Are there any European car enthusiasts out there who can help me identify this vehicle? Or is it a Czech custom car, designed to baffle and bemuse us all? Please don't tell me it is a Volvo, the shame would be too much.....

It's not the Volvo John, and looking closely at that photo, there's something not quite right ... when I have the time to sit and ponder, I'll look into it more.
