I had a phone call from my daughter, can I build a model for her ... for Christmas? I asked what it was she wants me to build and she tells me that her boyfriend's dad has a real Willy's Jeep and she would like to give him a model of it for Christmas. Well, I have a couple of Italeri Fire Jeeps in the stash which are basicaly the same, so I agreed. I'm in the workshop today so should have it started fairly quickly, it's a simple kit and seeing as though it's going to be all one colour ... drab! ... it should be reasonably easy to replicate? ... here it is ... ... here we go ...

Here we are at the end of the first day ... ... I did cheat a little using a tub I already had in the stash which was supposed to be used for another conversion. I've also broken a couple of bits which I've had to replace including the rear axle assembly, it was rather brittle. I have to scratchbuild a front towing hitch, and as you can see I've started that, unfortunately I need a new supply of plastruct which I should be able to fetch from somewhere tomorrow. Not decided if I'm scratchbuilding the side panels, we'll see how much time I've got.

I am totally envious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want a real Willys Jeep too.
My Brother has a Mahindra jeep that he has let go to rust and ruin and is now land locked in his garage. His neighbours built blocks of flats and he lost his access into his garage. It was a really capeable vehicle off road and was an eye turner in the street.
If I won the lotto I would get a true Willys with pintle for .50 and a replica. Then pose in the summer in ww2 uniform.
Would like to see how you would build your canvas cover and plastic glazing.
am watching this one Nick

... Would like to see how you would build your canvas cover and plastic glazing. Oh Nige, that's it, challenge on! ... I wasn't going to do the side panels, but what the hell? ... I think the best way would be to have a thin plastruct frame topped with tissue coated with pva glue, which replicated canvas really well. The side windows would be thin acetate sheet.

Nice going Nick. 'Funny', I was driving out of LX airport yesterday and there were three jeeps coming from the opposite direction, one was covered, the other with a .50 cal mounted and the other was a later version of the jeep you are doing. Seems like an early christmas present for someone as they had yellow ribbons all over them.

Not done anything to the model tonight, it's been one of those days and all I want to do is slob on the couch. I did spend an hour or so in the workshop last night though, the fuel can carrier at the rear is slightly incorrect so I scratch built a replacement.
I've had a couple of thoughts about the side covers on this build. I could attempt to construct them from tissue paper and PVA glue, alternatively, try 'Solartex'. Can anyone tell me if it's produced in camo colours?

Nick,
If you give me your address, I have some off cuts of solartex I will send you to experiment with. I have sprayed it with Halfords acrylics and they bond OK.
