Oh b*gger! And I was just about to offer to take that hull off your hands for that very reason. Go over to accurate armour's website, they do a couple of conversions for the recce Stuart using the old Tamiya kit or the AFV club M3 (update... AFV conv seems to have disappeared from their site for some reason). I've got a Military Modelling article by Steve Zaloga that covers the conversion. If you want a copy of it email me. You could even scratchbuild the recce version as it's not that difficult, thinking of doing that myself...along with lots of other interesting projects that may never get done Update... In the Zaloga article it mentions 18 M3A1's were converted for trials and in the North African campaign stuarts were used without turrets for recce work, apparently 2 photos show riveted hull M3s being used.
There's a fairly good chance that M3A1s were used in the same way as the older vehicles would have been relegated to secondary duties. In a sense it would be a similar situation to the M7 Kangaroo thread that i kicked off a while back.
Other treadheads out there will know more about this subject than me, it'll be interesting to see if others know of M3A1 recce tanks.
Update....
I've just had a flash of inspiration! (which is rare for me)
I have a old built up Tamiya M3A1 that's been stripped of paint with Mr Muscle. You can have the turret it if you want it but I'm not sure how accurate the turret is.

No probs. With all those Shermans, Priests, and Grant/Lee kits built, you still find time to dabble in Stuarts as well?

Got to wait 20 years for my retirement At least it'll give me more time to buy kits that I'll never have the time to build when I do retire ;D I must admit to having a soft spot for the Stuart, especially the later versions

I wish you'd stop posting all this M3/M5 family stuff, I'm getting an uncontrollable urge to go and buy some of the kits and start building them myself! Ye gods, I've even contemplated buying the Accruate Armour combi kit for the Stuart recce

Now now, stop trying to spend my money... The interior's the reason why I may have to get the AA conversion. That Military Modelling piece by Steve Zaloga I mentioned a while back has some good pics of his model. He says that you could use the Academy interior with the AFV Club kit but it's around the turret ring where the problems start. The AA set seems to show welded plate but Steve's model doesn't have it. Plus there's some other bits and bobs. You also need a no19 radio set, which normally wouldn't bother me as I'd use any radio set, but it does seems quite distinctive. If you haven't got the Mil Mod article I can scan it and email you, it's worth it for Stuart fans. If you want it let me know.

The mag was to hand as I'd been fondling it recently. And the scanner is about 1 foot away from the PC keyboard. Strike while the iron's hot! Don't you just love technology

If you're interested there's a build article of the Academy M3 Honey in the latest Scale Military Modeller International (Issue 2)

With some new kits just arrived I feel like a break from M3s, 'but', will persevere with this project.
Does anyone else get this when making a model, then finds something else on the shelf or through the post that gets you wanting to build itAll the d**n time, and of course you keep doing it to me with all these Stuart postings... ;D Just picked up the Revell Gannett at the Brampton show at the weekend, that's now calling for my attention as well...

Hi If my memory serves me right I think there is a recce version at Duxford museum near cambridge in the land warfare exhibition. I might have a few pic's of it I'll see if I can find them.

If I remember rightly, Duxford's one is a gun tower, not a recce one (and might even be an M5) Chris
