Decided to dabble with 48th armour myself recently. Tamiya kits are generally good though most have a metal chassis. I built a couple of Hobby Boss kits (T34/85 and M4A3 76mm) and they were quite fiddly. But a word of warning about the figures, Tamiya's 48th range is not good, I bought some German, US and Russian figures and was disappointed with them. They suffer from soft detail and I have read somewhere that they are underscale. There's some good 48th resin figures out there though.
Personally I'm going back to 35th scale for various reasons, but that's nothing to do with the quality of 48th armour.

Well I have to agree with you Neil on 1.48th scale figures. Having done one or two 1/48th scale, I to have now left this well alone in the military side of things. but not with AirCraft in that scale. Still have many 1/72nd to do in military plus the good old 1/35th, so will stick with that in the future.

After a visit to Avon IPMS show today, i like youselves have decided to stick with 1/35, as there is far more scope and also i managed to grab a few bargins which helped the decision. Many thanks Dave

Before you finally make up your mind, have a look at the gallery and discussion forum, on www.track48.com . The models of Lu Rodriguez, Pat Johnston, Konrad Schreier and many others JUST might make you want to reconsider moving back from 35th!! There are lots of figures coming on the scene, Nigel at Parabellum for example, and Olivier at www.quarter-kit.com keeps a phenominal range of items. There are now several dozens of aftermarket producers of etched, cast resin and metal parts, decals and more. Modesty forbids of course that I should mention my own humble efforts, at www.fighting48th.com, so I won't, but anyone who saw the last issue of Military Modelling couldn't have missed Steve Zalogas Sherman Crab conversion, it was all over the front cover! And that was a 48th scale model... Tim Perry

Tim Perry While Tim might not, I will say that the quality of Tim's resins are excellent and well worth investing in. Of course I am biased as I get them delivered to the door by the Proprietor But money talks and I've bought them... Allied to maybe a Hobby Boss 1/48th, you are off to a flying (Fighting?) start. So Tim... any chance of you doing some quarter scale figures? I remember your 1/72nd scale blokes were just about the best I'd seen. Come on - how about a commander figure and a driver for the Sherman for now and a female driver and tank riders for Russian Shermans and T-34s later?

I'm a 1:48 convert and now only collect at this scale (aircraft, armour and figures).
I've picked up a few Tamiya kits previouly and they seem excelant all round, just a more compact version of the usual 1:35 but with just as much detail and quality. I just picked up my first Hobby Boss kit (of a Soviet KV1) in 1:48 today. Having just looked in the box, it looks very good, with crisp detail and moulding, and will look forward to assembling when its turn comes up on my list of kits to do.

We saw several 1/48 Hobby Boss kits at Elvington today being sold for £6.00. I'm not really an armour modeller but looking inside the boxes, some included interior detail. Excellent value for money at that price, but 1/48 is definitely too small for me.

Ah yes, that's one of the ones I got, marked at £11 on the box, but all down to £6.
They had KV1s and loads of different Sherman versions earlier in the day, by mid afternoon nearly all the Shermans had gone (but I was after a Soviet tank so suited me).

Good news for 48th scale collectors, Tamiya have released the Sd.Kfz 251D German infantry half track. They've had the shorter 250 out for a while, but I was waiting for the more famous 251 to appear. image courtesy of www.tamiya.comThere was a Sd.Kfz 251 C released by AFV Club, although not sure how the quality or price compares, but one difference is the AFV Club one has vinyl tracks while the Tamiya one has individual links.
