Ayup Sean, I've emailed the Tank Museum at Bovington for a brief answer to that question. Basically, I asked what the main noticable differences were between the Mk 5 and the Mk 10.

Ayup Folks,
Just received the following from David Fletcher of the Bovington Tank Museum, which was in reply to an email sent to the museum this morning, requesting the main differences between the Chieftain Mk 5 & Mk 10 ...
"The days when one could identify the Mark of a tank just by looking at it probably ended with the Centurion. With Chieftain we only work off number plates but even then there are difficulties because the registration cards are not always up to date. Simon Dunstan’s New Vanguard title on the Chieftain is undoubtedly the best source. Many of the differences are purely internal and even IFCS, which ought to be a distinguishing feature, can be found on the Mark 5/3. Aside from that Stillbrew is the only obvious feature.
In fact I don’t think there is a simple answer. Simon’s book is undoubtedly the best published source but even that is too thin to be comprehensive. It really needs someone with a good eye, and time on their hands, to go back to basics and try to work it all out. It is instructive, for example, to look at a Fotofax title on the Chieftain that Simon did for Arms & Armour Press in 1989 and compare it with the New Vanguard title. The list of Mark differences is completely different, and that after a further 14 years research!"

My thanks to David Fletcher for a very swift and informative reply.
