As you may know, I've been on my travels again, this time it was only down towards London, but I just happened to visit a a little event where there were a few old jalopies present. I'll post a few pics in due course, but here's something to get you all started. What car is this radiator ornament from? ... ... more soon.

Well, Hispano Suiza had a stork, all long and lean and elegant. Bentley had a winged B, stylish and tastefully restrained. Reliant had a robin, one-legged with a cough. (No moans from ex owners please, I had its Austin side valved predecessor in my youth and I know!) But who could afford a quail on the wing? Or is it a grouse?

French types had some pretty amazing ornaments, but the likes of Alvis were not far behind. If I'm correct, it's a Quail Rich

Just for once in my life I get a chance of using one of those 'orrible crossword clues as an answer and it sinks without trace.....but at least I tried!
As in ...."who could afFORD A quail on the wing?'.....
OK, so it wasn't a Telegraph crossword clue, possibly not even the Sun. But it was the answer......

Wowser, a proper car! Even properer than any ordinary tin box, to boot! Mine had a petrol tank, a fibreglass body, a steering wheel and lights that sometimes worked. Beyond that (oh, and number plates that nobody nicked...) I suppose that the Reliant badge was the only other thing we shared. It was a Regal IV, the ply floor had rotted out and I replaced it with marine ply coated with three or four layers of cuprinol each side...allegedly it didn't smell as bad as creosote and worked just as well. On a steep hill even Honda 50 'chicken chasers' zoomed past! The engine was well past its best, the gearbox was interesting and the handling seriously worse than my 350BSA with shot suspension and worn swinging arm bearings. But I kept dry! (mostly) It went to that great breakers yard after two years of unreliability and the mockery of more affluent friends. I'd love to say how fondly I recall its quirks, but I don't! Even a Honda 250 Superdream was considered a brilliant replacement. John

I came VERY close to getting an early version last year, but a long and complicated story cut short, it fell through. I have a few books and catalogues if you're interested and don't already have them. Rich

Rich, I'm always interested in that sort of stuff - PM me.
Rich - Scimitars are virtually being thrown away nowadys, if you're mechanically inclined you honestly will not find a better classic. My sister just bought a 1977 SE6A for £250. It looks an utter heap but it had over nine grand spent on it in the last 10 years, mechanically it's better than new, it just looks hideous.
Persevere!

Hi,
Some might think this is terrible but I wanna take that '30 Ford A Fordor Sedan and rod it! I'd keep the ornament though...
Cheers,
