That's interesting Ian. The J in a triangle identifies the aircraft as being of the 351st BG, who were stationed at Polebrook, Northants. The Sqn codes DS-M are from the 511th BS. In 1943 all aircraft in that squadron carried names that included 'ball', a practice originated by their first Commander, Major Clinton Ball - Linda Ball (his daughter), Speedball, Cannon Ball, Screwball, Snowball, Fireball, Thunderball etc etc. In 1944 the squadron became a Pathfinder unit and the 'ball' tradition had been dropped. Two other aircraft that carried the codes DS-M were 44-8453 ‘Partnership M for Mike’, a Boeing B-17F Flying Fortress fitted with H2X and the other a Boeing B-17G-85-VE Flying Fortress fitted with H2X s/n 44-29849. Not to dispute the markings, clearly Sqn codes were recycled when aircraft were lost.
