Well, I will start off with ones I have personally worked on:
Lockheed U-2C & U-2R Dragon Lady Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird McDonnell Douglas RF-4 Phantom II Teledyne Ryan AQM-34 series Firebee recce drones
And for ones that played a significant role in military events:
Spitfire PR variants P-38 PR variants P-51 PR variants

OK Predictable I know; but for me it has to be the Canberra, including the RB.57's culminating in the PR.9, as for the other types, Mosquito, and SR.71

'spose it's showing my age, but how about going back to the the beginnings?
Cody kites.....well, why not? Uses an aerofoil for lift......carries a man...... Maurice Farman Longhorn (or its Shorthorn successors) Etrich Taube Albatros C1 Dirigibles and Zeppelins of varying types (may be stretching the aircraft bit rather too far, methinks) Lockheed 12A as flown by Sidney Cotton (sneaky-beaky recce....) Spitfires of the PR ilk L2-L6 Grasshopper series
Time to leave, I think. John

Hmmmmm,
Interesting. Some predictable choices, not without justification though, and I have to completely agree with any aircraft, does not have to be heavier than air.
Of course mark one eyeball cannot be ignored..... Doesn't have to have a camera or any other fancy piece of technology used in the aircraft....
I think I will wait a little longer to express my thoughts/choices. To see what else crops up.....

OK
Some appropriate choices, however how about the Arado Ar 234 - first jet powered recce mission. Definitely a significant milestone.

RF-8 Crusader - played a key role in the Cuban Missile Crisis. (As an aside, ever seen the film "13 Days"? If not, you've missed a treat)
F9F-8P Cougar - I just love the "beautiful ugliness" of this beast.

Well, preferences are personal I assume,
but I somehow wonder why not more votes for:
Two Merlins and the most elegant furniture ever to have flown far and wide, outrunning and outclimbing everything exept the first jets at the very end of the great unpleasantness -
DeHavilland's iconic Mosquito !
All the best for a happy and healthy New Year to everybody.

A further thought - what about those overgrown Canberras - RB-57D, E (was there an E?) and F? Amazing.

Hi Mike There was indeed an RB.57E, 2 different types, one much more capable than the other, both with standard span wings. John

Spare a thought too for all the light aircraft, from the Auster to the Cessna Skymaster, used in the Artillery Spotting/FAC roles - particularly the various Auster variants, a classic design if there ever was one.
