Some thirty odd years ago I remember reading Johnny Red, a character in Battle Action comic, and the squadron flew a mission against a heavily armoured train. The LA-5s ( I think) were carrying aerial torpedoes to crack the armour. Is this factual? I can find no reference to this kind of weapon but would like to pursue it as I make What If? Eastern Front models. Any help greatly appreciated.

I think it depends what you mean by "aerial torpedo". Wikipedia uses the common meaning of an air-launched, free running sea torpedo. The stores positions on La-5s were normally under the wings. Air launched torpedoes were normally too big for fighter aeroplanes. (Torpedo carriers like the Firebrand and Skyraider were much bigger.) Particularly between the wars, the term "aerial torpedo" was used for primitive cruise missiles. I can't find any reference to these on Russian Fighters. The La-5 did carry RS-82 unguided rockets. Why not research Johnny directly at www.falconsquadron.sevenpennynightmare.co.uk/story/1985/1985.htm ?

Thank you Hartd. I never considered that some bright spark would have made all the pages available. The story runs in Jan 1978. What a trip down memory lane. La-5s with some kind of air-launched short torpedo. Well worth pursuing. Currently working on an A-26 Invader in conifer camouflage with four nose mounted 20mm and two more podded on the wings. I'll do the La-5 after I can source some parts for a likely looking torpedo. Many thanks.
