Now then, here's a suggestion for the truck modellers to get their creative paws into. Pick a truck kit, build it either stock or chop it, add stuff like plumbing, damage, wear and tear, weathering and turn it into a yard shunter. Then if Wolfie agrees, place the results on his tables at SMW 2010 and we'll have a vote on the best model taking into account imagination, subject, modelling skill and presentation (base, diorama etc.). I'll set a limit to the amount you can spend above the price of the kit, that should level the playing field a tad, there maybe a prize involved? If there's enough interest, I'll ask JT if he'll do a decent spread in the magazine.
Anyone interested ...

I could be tempted.... ;D I'll leave the decision until March and if there's enough participants, I'll start a new category and everyone will have their own thread. Possibly running for about 6 months, that way everyone will have time to find a kit and decide just what to do.

Pat there's no rush matey there's space in the build should you want it. I've got to write the rules up as yet and find a prize so no need for decisions as yet.

Love that Ford Cargo and that's exactly how I imagine a shunter to be. My ideal truck of all those shown would be the ERF but as they're like hens teeth now they've been discontinued by KFS, not to mention possibly too expensive for this particular build, it's pick an available kit and get on with it. I have the choice from the stash at the moment of a M.A.N F90 6x4 which has been documented as a shunter in a couple of yards but more likely as a conversion to a 4x2. There's a different type of shunter, the demountable and there's a Volvo chassis sitting and waiting, all I have to do is scratch the demounting gear, maybe a tad beyond my skills at the moment but I'm always willing to give something a try.

Are you a member on Trucknet Nick? In the members only photo section, under 'Yard shunters' thread (surprise!) there is a picture of what I think is a 6x4 ERF with the centre tyres removed - instant 4x2! ;D Got a nice smashed bumper too

Great minds think alike eh, I'm waiting for admin approval for my membership. Edit ... Would you believe it, no sooner had I posted than I had an email confirming my membership activation. I went straight to the shunters thread and scrolled down to the ERF, that's sinful, what a way to treat an old dog? I did however take a shine to the old black Merc an then there was the Volvo FL ... dare I have a go at bodging a rare kit? ;D ... it's only plastic ...

The more I delve into the 'Trucknet' site looking at the pictures of shunters the more the juices start to flow and the more ideas come to mind for the build. Let's have a bit of a discussion, just what is a yard shunter? To me, a shunter, apart from a purpose built tug, falls into two categories, a tractor unit and a prime mover. I propose this build is based on the tractor unit, any configuration so long as it's plausible.
How old would a vehicle be before it's consigned to shunting or yard duties? Let's say for our build that the vehicle we're going to replicate is about ten years old. It's earned it's keep, the company has been reasonably successful and the road fleet is being updated, but there is a need to keep at least one of the old gals for yard duties.
I've been looking through some of the back issues of TMW and in particular issue 158 which has the reprint of Andrew Howard's 'Rust in Peace' M.A.N from 1996, it's a superb build. That truck would not be out of place in a yard full of concrete products. So, let's have your ideas. In order for this build to be successful, we need at least 5 people to commit to the build, the more the merrier.

I'll have a go at it too. Will be alittle while before I can start though - have an easter bonnet to make and a doll's house to decorate first!

My main problem (besides time!) is not having suitable material. I had thought about using my KFS ERF A series but I don't really want to beat it up and I think plastic would be easier to work anyway. Most of my kits have been bought over the last couple of years and are more US orientated. Had thought about a Scania 111 (?) but if I buy more kits, I may not be alive in November ;D

I've got the Airfix Scania and the Revell Volvo F12, two rather hard to find kits, but to my mind, they would suit this build. They're only plastic kits on the shelf until someone decides to build them, then they're models, so they require a special subject as an excuse to build them. All I have to do is sort out a way of converting them both to RHD. I've just had a flick through the BRS thread on 'Trucknet' and the Scania would be ideal in BRS Southampton Livery, although at the time it was a working truck, not a shunter.

I managed to get a RHD kit from M&G so the M.A.N F90 is my shunter. Not sure yet if I'm going to chop it into a 4x2, I'll just make a decision one morning and go for it.
