Hi,
Some might say that pre-painted e-brass, from e.g. Eduard, is cheating. It achieves a level of detail that is impossible to achieve with the finest of brushes and optical aids. A modeller always aims to better a kit with whatever is available though. Would use of such deny as high a placement in judging results compared to someone staying with the ill defined kit parts, placards, radio faces etc, and doing a fair job at most with such and paint. Would such in fact deny any placement ?
Modellers that buy standard unpainted e-brass are cheating compared to those that attempt to make such parts using traditional materials one might say, so whats the difference anyway ?
Should judging be on purchasing ability or dexterity of hand and paintbrush. Admittedly e-brass may indicate even greater dexterity than just kit parts usage, its not easy stuff when it gets to items smaller than a pin head!
Say a modeller has top class skills and aims for as realistic a model as possible. Scratchbuilds and corrects a number of parts in the cockpit, then faces facts and goes for a prepainted radio and placards, levers etc set, same sort of choice as facing facts that the items made in unpainted brass better what he can achieve despite his top notch skills, so he adds some unpainted brass and paints that. He finishes the model and it looks stunning. Another modeller hasnt quite the same finishing and modelling skills generally on the model but goes for traditional painting of kit radio faces, inst panel , puts some e-brass in it, painting it himself.
Would the far better looking cockpit and the generally better looking model of the same aircraft receive a lesser placement because of the use of pre-painted parts ?
I ask, what are the rules on this ?
Modellers need to know before aiming for gold and wrecking chances by buying pre-painted sets. Once the competition is over they want something that looks as good as is possible when displayed away from such events so they would hope such purchases do not detract from judging the best looking model.
Same goes for pre cut masks, if a modeller uses such for glazing painting and another spends hours on careful masking, who should be rewarded more in the judging ?
Are we judging purchasing power or modelling skills. Is it the fault of the better skilled modeller who could have done it the long winded way and still achieved the same result as with precut masks, that the other modeller couldnt afford them and created a lesser quality result.
Are there any rules on this for judges ? I ask as I am about to use a pre-painted set to achieve a look that I wanted for my model and wondering if all my other work, much improving of kit and superdetailing is to be undone in the comp area with such ? Perhaps the inclusion of items hand crafted etc and some notable superdetailing would help keep the judges impressed to not let the precoloured items have a detrimental effect on placement of awards.
Would the same ruling on things like pre-painted aply to all IPMS Branch shows competitions ?
