Hi Out There, Has anyone any advice which is the best kit to use to model a Spitfire Mk VIII ? I cnnot find a hasegawa kit anywhere (Lord Lucan would be easier !!!). I have heard mention that the Italeri Mk IX is the best bet. Or could it be the new Airfix Mk IX ? I am struggling. Regards

The Italeri kit shares some mouldings with their V so the engine cowlings are separate from the main fuselage. On those grounds the Airfix IX is probably easier to build. Most VIIIs (but not all) had the broad chord rudder with the pointy top so you'll need to check if this is in the Airfix kit (I don't have one) and whether it is applicable to the VIII you want to build.

The Airfix kit would be the best bet, but it doesn't have the broad chord/pointy rudder. This is an option with some other kits and there are also some resin sets that have the required rudder. That would leave you with scratching up some doors for the retractable tail wheel and finding some cockpit detail. Personally I'd be tempted to kit bash an Italeri and Airfix kit as the Italeri kit is a useful source for spares, has the requisite rudder and some cockpit bits that should fit the Airfix without too much trouble.

Hi Rossm,Peebeep & Rob, Many thanks for your replies. Now I'm between a 'rock and a hard place'. What a decision to make. All your points make sense. The Italeri has the 'pointy' rudder, the Airfix is probably the newest of the bunch but has no 'pointy' rudder, & the CMR is 'pricy' and also resin, which has never been my favourite medium. I guess the decision is down to my personal choice. Thanks for giving me the options Guys. Regards WEEMAN

Don't forget the tailwheel doors. Frog did an 8/9 many years back - one of their later & better efforts but I think you're better modifying the Italaeri - in which case, make yourself a template (acetate sheet, trace off drawings and cut out) and scribe in the top line of the wing fillet. The kit's not at all bad otherwise. Good luck ... Bri.
