Hi all,
I have a project on the back burner at the moment that I could use some help with. I am converting the Tamiya 1/48 scale B Mk IV into a PR I, specifically W4060. I talked about this with Colin S-K before but I am trying to pin down the markings- mainly the unit/aircraft letters, if any, that she carried in the spring of 1942. I have the Warpaint Special and a SAMI book on Mossie schemes, as well as the Osprey book that includes PR's. There is an in-flight shot of W4060 showing no letters as all, but it was made later according to the captions. Those first few PR I's carried schemes with different lower surface colors depending upon the time frame, but I am pretty sure based upon the evidence that a scheme of Sky Grey (or a faded MSG) and Slate Grey over PRU Blue was used.
The time frame, spring 1942, is important because the a/c was flown then on the first ever Mosquito post-strike mission near Paris. The cloud cover was solid down to 400-600 feet, and the crew navigated up the Seine River to Paris to find the target and photograph it at very low level; a great story!
The real question is, was she carrying any codes at that time? The first few PR I's carried the "LY" recce codes, some with individual letters and some not in late '41- early '42. W4060 carried no codes by the summer of '42, but I haven't found any pics so far of her in the time period I am interested in. A side issue is that the first 10 or so PR I's also were named for various liqueurs (and carried same in small letters on the left nose), but nothing I've found gives a name for W4060.
I think I've stalled on the project since I cannot quite nail down the markings details. Yeah, I'm one of those... does anyone have additional information of this a/c, for the time frame, beyond the sources I've mentioned?
Thanks in advance, Jim
