Whilst having a quiet lie-down and waiting for the men in white coats after finishing my latest project* I started wondering why we do this to ourselves and this led me to think of the seven ages of modelling. 1. Innocence. You buy a model, glue the bits together, paint it and put on the decals 2. Urge to improve. You start filling gaps, filing down seams etc 3. Increasing skill. You purchase airbrush and special tools and find that you have started a stash 4. Loss of innocence. You start thinking ‘surely that can’t be right’ and find yourself checking reference books and realising that manufacturers make mistakes and sometimes don’t care about it. 5. Customisation. You start correcting errors, purchasing replacement parts and aftermarket decals 6. Advanced Modeller Syndrome. You spend all your time trawling reference books and can never get enough information to finish anything. Your stash is too large to handle. 7. Afterlife. You become a modelling committee man Does anyone else have thoughts on this matter? John *Hawker P1040 from an old Sea Hawk www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=48519

The only stage I think you have missed would be:
5.1 Completely Demoralised. No matter how much research or aftermarket parts you throw at a model it still doesn't seem to be good enough.

You also missed 6.1 - Epiphany. The moment you realise that you don't have to correct everything, that it is just a hobby and as long as you're enjoying yourself, who gives a rats! Cheers, Rob M. (Stuck in 'Afterlife' and spending more time organising Modellers than building Models)!

Degenerated: The bits are too small to see or handle and may never go on correctly. What the heck: It looks good enough, and I never enter for a competition, so what the.. Where do you put them all: Got to put them out of the way of little hands and wife with duster

This is very profound.
Personally I think it is all circular. You reach the areas of 6 and 7 which I think is when the 'epiphany' happens and you decide to 'just do one OOB' in which case you go back to 2 or 3 rather than 1. You rediscover the joy of going with the flow and just making a model (this also reduces the statsh) before the urge to add more PE becomes overwhelming and before you know it you are back at level 6/7 with a whole new stash.
My two penneth worth anyway.

brightonrock - buy a cabinet. And put the wife in it! I'm also a little disturbed that I've jumped from 3 to 7.

6 and 7 definitely, but I have a cunning plan to relieve myself of 7. That leads me towards 6 and a realisation that I should get out more. However, if I do go out that puts me below 6 towards 5, so, erm ... what was the question, I'm old ya know.

Forgotten your meds again? Oi! ... Medication taken and back with the plot. I have to admit that for the past few years I've certainly been guilty of (6), these days I don't seem to be able to open a kit box and build what's inside without making a few modifications or alterations. That's where the 'Beyond the Box' builds keep me from total modellers' bloc, I can build something without someone telling me the colour is wrong or a vehicle was never like that.

5.1 Completely Demoralised - I thought that I had covered this in 6 6.1 - Epiphany A good one. It was a conversation on the way home from the local model club that started me thinking. I was saying that in view of my advancing years I was going to have to lower my ambitions or else I would never get around to making many of the models that I wanted and my friend burst out laughing and said 'John - we all go through this at some stage!'

Isn't the true 7th age reached when one says "blow this, I'm going to build out of the box for fun and not care what the judges say because I can't be bothered with competitions any more"? Cheers John

Is there not eight or nine ages?
Eight being
Decline
All your parts start falling off, looks faid even if the parts are reattached and touched up, and some parts even whilt and droop at strange angles due to having been left alone in dark rooms.
Some of the folk seem to be well ahead on this stage (tee hee) !
Nine
Resurrection
People fall heir to all your model stash, tool collection, part builds, paints and reference materials. At least one or two from the thousands of models in your stash ACTUALLY get built or finished by somebody.
Karen will have a field day emtying my sshed of round to-its !!!!!! Get yer bids in early folks !!! Karen will murder me if I come through the door with any more.

No Resurrection will be possible; I am reliably told that all my plastic will burn with me! My fate is sealed unless I can continue to build them in whatever place I end up in, oh heck it might be too hot for plastic in that after world.
