Tamiya 1/48 F4-U1P Corsair

Just finished for a Pacific war group build something a little different,the camara was a field modification and only a few were converted.

Where did you get your references to the camera window locations & size?

This is a nice, interesting and superb build of an almost unknown recce version

Wouldn't you consider sharing some details of the recce fit or even a build report in the Photo Recce threads ?

Hi Larry and popeye thanks for the comments,the reference I used Larry is in the Squadron Signal in action book which has a nice pic of this aircraft.If you want to see how I built it here goes

These are the aftermarket bits I used



The fuselarge and cockpit were sprayed vallejo olive green and then given an oil wash of burnt umber and black.









After this was drybrushed in a light green made up with yellow and green oil paint.The Eduard photo etch cockpit set was now installed.


















Next the hatch for the camera was cut out,



The cowl flap actuators were then reproduced using plastic card and rod.







The wheel wells were detailed and painted.









Next up the engine was detailed with copper wire and plastic card











The wing folds recieved a bit of attention too




A camera was scratc built out of plastic card and tube.






and painted.


Now for the important bit,the camera window was made from a side of a 109 canopy glued into place,sanded and shaped then polished with a miracle polisher.









The hatch surround was made with thin aluminium tape and the window masked off.





The undercarriage legs recieved copper wire brake lines.



The model was now painted using Tamiya sea blue which was then lightened with white and random panels sprayed.After this was dry klear was sprayed on in a couple of coats ready for the decals.I used a mixture of the kit decals and Techmod and they went on without any problems.

When the decals were dry a final coat of klear was sprayed on and the kit was ready to come together.



Before the final stages promodellers light wash was applied to simulate the salt deposits that accumulated around the airframe.

















Final assembly now took place.









and voila one finished F4-U1P













and here it is next to anther Bunker hill aircraft

Hi Guys,

This is the Recce Corsaire that Intend to exhibit on the SIG table at SMW 2010 along with my Recce Hellcat see below:



I provided the Corsaire kit the add ons and reserach to Andrew, my brother after I had got him hooked on WWII US Navy aircraft by getting him to build the Helldiver (seen with the corsaire in the last photo) for my birthday earlier in the year. He's a much better modeller than me, but I learn alot from him with his photo builds on Pro Modeller.

Colin, I would love to exhibit all 3 together on the SIG table, would you allow the Helldiver even though it wasn't a Recce aircraft?

Hi Ivan,no secrets the wash is the Promodellers light dirt and the paints I used were Tamiya for the gloss blue,revell for the bright green and various vallejo for the rest.
