Hi,
I started model-making in the days when Airfix kits were sold in plastic packets for 2/6d. I continued with 1/72 aircraft kits plus a vehicle or two until the early 1980s when family and work responsibilities took over and I "left" the hobby.
I am now retired and I want to restart my model-making hobby but living in South Africa has its difficulties. Firstly the old style model shops are almost non-existant today (although the internet overcomes that one) and secondly, IPMS South Africa seems dormant. Certainly, the web site has not been meaningfully updated for some considerable time and what items there are relate to SA armour and aircraft. I think the last IPMS SA Nationals, held in Bloemfontein, was at least a couple of years ago.
So there are three reasons for starting this thread; 1 to say "hi" to IPMS members in the UK - I am originally from Birmingham, now living near Durban, South Africa. 2 that I will be following the forum threads 3 and, in all probability, I will be seeking help at some stage now that I have unearthed my stash of kits.
Cheers
John

Hi John. The tale of leaving the hobby in younger days and returning later in life seems to be common among so many fellow modellers I speak to. I think the hobby is having a real renaissance at the moment, partly due to the quality of new kits, aftermarket products and supporting publications, but also not least due to the internet. It really helps to bring people of a common interest from around the world together to share their interest, which is a great benefit to participating in the hobby from a distance. Rob

Welcome John. How funny - I started my model-building efforts in Durban at the IPMS SA Durban branch in the 70's! Been back home in the UK for many years now, with more kits than time. (I have some time to go before retirement). Maybe it is time to restart IPMS in Durban again.
