Pick the brain time. I've just started the Airfix Vulcan, and noticed that the XH607 has underwing mounting points. I'm presuming that this was something to do with the Falklands flights. What was hung there? Extra fuel tanks? External weapons? If you could enlighten me, I'd be grateful
Cheers

Hi Jon, if you mean XM607, this was one of the Vulcan's used to attack the Falklands (3 sorties) the other one being XM597 (2 sorties)
According to Tim Laming (The Vulcan story) Xm607 carried an : AN/ALQ- 101 counter measures pod under the wing, there is also photo's of XM597 with a Martel under one wing and the AN/ALQ pod under the other. 597 is also photographed carrying shrike missiles.

Hi Jon,
just looked in the back of the book which lists aircraft serial numbers and a brief history of each. The XH range of serial numbers stop at XH563 (B1's) and B2's starting with the range of XJ, XL and XM.
Hope that's of some use for you .

Cheers chaps, a typo on my behalf. XM607 is the one. I shall have to rummage through the spares box to see if I can find the mentioned 'under wing stores'.

Some of the later Vulcans were equipped to carry the skybolt missile. During the Falklands conflict the later Black Buck mission Vulcans were carrying AGM45 Shrike Anti-radiation missiles. Indeed one of the last flights, the Vulcan dropped it's bombs then flew around at fairly low level hoping to bait the occupying forces into turning their radars on so the Vulcan could destroy it with a missile. Now that's brave!

As the author of the afore-mentioned book, I can confirm that XM607 did indeed carry two under wing pylons. One was used to carry the AN/ALQ-101 pod on the Black Buck raid.
After the Falklands missions, XM607 was seen at Waddington for quite some time carrying twin Shrike launch rails on each pylon, usually with just one Shrike training round attached. As far as I can determine, XM607 never carried any Martels - the trails fit seems to have only been done on XM597.
As mentioned, some Vulcans were modified to carry Skybolts (but never did in RAF service). This was why XM607 was chosen for use in the Falklands as it had the modified internal structure and also had the redundant ducting which was used for the new cabling required for the new pylons.
