I'm planning on a 1:35 Jeep build based on the Tamiya kit and looking to do an armoured version, 82nd Airborne, Bastogne. I plan to include a radio in the build.
Apparently there were two types fitted to these vehicles, the SCR-193 & SCR-510/BC-620. The SCR-193 had a 30-60 mile range and was often used for air support. The SCR-510/BC-620 was used by U.S. Army reconnaissance units. It had only about a five mile range and was used for calling in artillery support. I have mixed feelings as to which radio was found in an armoured jeep belonging to the 82nd. Both types seem to make sense?
So far my research has not been able to identify the correct type for this unit in this period (or any other for that matter).
I haven’t been able to find any material which points directly to either set up being used by the 82nd so that info, one way or another, would be very helpful.
Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated.
Just starting on my research for this build but am having trouble finding info on this detail, anyone know - or can someone point me to reference material that may shed some light???

Thanks very much for the links - the last of the three is an especially good source.
What I really want to get right is making sure that what I model is historically accurate so I may need to find an expert on the WWII 82nd Airborne. I've tried WWII radio experts but they know the equipment but not the unit histories, which is perfectly understandable.
I know that armoured jeeps existed and there are a number of photographs from the Battle of the Bulge specifically crediting them to the 82nd. I know that armoured jeeps were sometimes fitted with radios (or perhaps that jeeps with radios were fitted with armour - often the armour was a 'field modification'). What I don't know for sure is if the 82nd would have had any of these vehicles and if so, with which radio?
I could make an argument that either radio type would have been fitted but I would rather change the project so that it doesn't include the radio if I cannot find the necessary historical documentation to back it up.

A visit to the 'War and Peace' show at Beltring in Kent may be advisable. Not only is it Europe's largest military event it's a vast store of information from the owners of the vehicles. I don't know if an armoured jeep will attend but there's possibly someone at the show who may have the information you need: www.thewarandpeaceshow.com/

What might be even more useful however is one of the links from that site - G503.com looks to contain a wealth of information. Bruce
