I notice Colin has infiltrated the Nautical threads too - odds on he is drafting a thread for the Sci Fi section, Romulan Bird of Prey Recce Variant anyone?
How big can this thing get.

funny you should say that but the Klingon Bird of Prey was originaly a Recce ship which in later variants was upgraded to battle status. The Klingons are a bit like the Russians from that point of view. Build small and strong and why use a machine gun if a cannon will fit!

It strikes me that there was some sort of treaty/exchange of technology between the Romulans and Klingons in the early days as their 'entry level' birds of prey as seen on the Original Series are very similar. It is only later that the Romulan Warbirds and Klingon Birds of Prey diverged into separate 'Marks'.
Lots of scope for Recce stuff though - how about Kirk in the transporter beam. You could also just have a simple base with the nameplate saying 'Romulan Bird of Prey - Cloaked', not sure you would win any prizes though.

I still recall a comp entry at a Tyneside show of 'The Captains Log'. Not quite what you expected at first viewing. There is much suggestion that the Vulcans and Romulans come from common stock. The Romulans provided the Klingons with some technology against the Vulcan first contact rules. H

I get the impression all three races had some sort of common ancestral home as they all looked very similar in the original series, until of course the Klingons went all 'Neanderthal' during the 'films' and TNG.
The vulcans are an uppity bunch - no fun at all

Captain's Log, I dread to think!!!...no doubt 1/1 scale!
Honestly no I had not thought of 'trying it on' with the sci-fi folks, as I must admit I have a preference for keeping things 'real'........as far as models are concerned.......
I have loved reading and watching science fiction throughout my life, HOWEVER, Science Fiction is just that, FICTION........my preference would be NOT be, to include sci-fi models........If there is a large swell of opinion otherwise, well I would have to go with it...
But for now I think models of things that actually existed/or still do, will suffice, ie aircraft/armour and possibly ships, although with the latter I still have to be shown an example of RECCE ship's....
But I must admit on a whimsical level, Spock or Checkov getting snared yet again....., let alone bird of prey, would be quite entertaining........................

"RECONNAISANCE (ri-konni-s'nss) noun
1. The process or activity of investigating or surveying.
2.a. A preliminary survey made of a region to examine its terrain or to determine the disposition of enemy forces.
2.b. A party making such a survey."
Gentlemen, as far as I am concerned:- 1. A model of anything that has been involved in any of the above activities, whether it be past, present or future is a "Recce" model. 2. The "parameters" for the SIG, if anyone wants them, is in the Dictionary definitions above.
Personally, I do not believe that we should formally sub-divide the SIG into, for example, armour, naval, aeroplanes etc ad nauseum. That would be a backward step in my view in that it would cause the SIG to be a disparate whole slowly crumbling into a multitude of incoherant parts.
I seem to recall that some time ago, somewhere, I wrote that the RECCE SIG was and could be the broadest of broad canvases on which to display our models. With the welcome joining of a modeller who builds armour and hopefully a few more of the same persuasion joining later, there is a very good possibilty that the SIG could, one day, provide, if you like, a visual narrative of the history of Reconnaisance. The only "groupings" would be time-line groupings with all models from one particular time period being grouped together. Scale I feel, would be immaterial, the time period in question would be the guide line and I do not think that an aircraft from WWI (say) would look out of place against a tank, gun, spotter, forward observation post or vessel from the same period.
We, as a group, have already gone back to WWI and are looking forward to the future with UAV's. But Gentlemen, there are whole historical periods before WWI running back down the ages. And beyond UAV's ?, who knows - only the writers of science fiction currently tell us. The broadest of broad canvases indeed.
All of which, where relevent to the "parameters" set out in the definitions above, are meat for the SIG modeller.
We have, as I see it, an opportunity to set out before the General Public and our fellow modellers a visual history of what interests us - Reconnaisance. The admixture of various modelling interests will inevitably cause comment, questions, interest and maybe even a little education. Can I but hope that it may also give a little "respectability" to our hobby as a whole?.
Dennis
PS. If a Special Interest Group is a SIG and the person who formed it is inevitably a SIG LEADER, does that mean that all those who belong to the SIG are.....................................
"Siglets"

That would be a backward step in my view in that it would cause the SIG to be a disparate whole slowly crumbling into a multitude of incoherant parts. ; I agree with your sentiments. My suggestion of setting parameters was to keep the basis of a SIG intact ie 'Special Interest', as stated almost any armoured vehicle can be used for Recce, Wittmans Tigers for instance, but are not Recce vehicles per se. As this is a 'Special Interest Group' I believe the vehicles should be restricted to Recce specific or vehicles used by dedicated recce troops. I believe that modelling any armour and putting a sign on saying 'Challenger 2 on a recce' dilutes the reasoning for the SIG. The SIG is there (IMHO) so that a specific mark of aircraft, armour, ship or whatever can be modelled under a collective banner and any model should have a strong recce link. Again, I agree with you in that I do not beleive the SIG should be sub divided based on armour, air, ship etc recce is recce is recce whatever the mode of transport, I for one tend to flit between aircraft and armour (ships are a dark art and should left to those that know) so i see no distinction between the two. Essentially we are modelling the concept of recce, the example we use, within the parameters set is irrelevant. In keeping with the subject of the SIG I would suggest SIGnallers Sci Fi not real? blimey, you will be telling me that a UFO didn't actually crash at Roswell next Paul

Signallers, sounds like a bunch of blokes waving flags... Siglets, sounds like young pigs rooting around, I do love bacon, but not quite right I feel... Signets, Hummm, cute little things that grow up to be things of beauty, I do like the sound of that.........................? How about Significants? Have you tried finding other words beginning with Sig........ ?? Dennis, Thanks for your post, and thank you for reminding us of definitions, I have to agree with on several counts, firstly that we should not 'fragment' the SIG, together we have the broadest canvas upon which we can paint, and it is the more significant for it, seperate we are diminished, The Photo RECCE SIG is about Reconnaissance, FULL STOP, that includes armour, ships and aircraft.................. Covers all sorts, throughout the ages, and I agree so far we are putting on a display that probably has more breadth and scope than many others, I would prefer us all together, working to the definitions you quote.....I almost feel that I ought to apologise for starting the posts about the SIG in 'aircraft', but that is water under the bridge. I shall continue to do most of my posts there, purely because I have got used to checking it every night. Loving all of the thoughts and conversation generated by these issues, look forward to more, and discussing it at SMW 2007.... Signets/Significants....undecided, and yet cannot think of any more. Plus I have just ordered my first ever armour kit! Colin

Colin, welcome to the wonderful world of wheels and tracks! So what have you ordered? Wingy things are fascinating, but so are AFVs and ships and racing cars (Can Am especially) and figures and motorbikes.....so far I have avoided trucks but it's only a matter of time, I'm sure. Oh, and OO model railways but not in my house as not enough room....but a recon splinter camo 'Flying Banana' just to wind up the Western Region fans appeals to my darker side. However I still think that a 1/1 scale crystal ball is the definitive recce tool.... javascript:add(%22%20: %22) John

Aye, Aye!, something ominous going on. People agreeing with me !!, must be getting old.
Must confess, within the privacy of this web site, that I have had temptations, quickly resisted, to build something "Armour" though more on the lines of a radio control tank to keep the grandchildren under control. So far I have found none that fire live ammunition!.
Floaty things - well as Sanguin says, they are a dark art especially for one that used to get sea-sick on the ferry between Malta and Gozo and who complained bitterly to the Royal Navy about the wind "upstairs" on HMS Bulwark whilst we were doing Harrier trials many moons ago (I like my dispersals to stay still - not bounce up and down and rock from side to side and as for moving - oh no!). Mind you, the RNLI do sell a very nice radio control Lifeboat and I do have a river ("Burn" up here) at the bottom of the garden and water always attracts the grandkids - Hmmm!!)
Railways - currently my favourite subject as later today I am boarding the 11.20 GNER at Leuchars for a very pleasant trip south of the border (I'll wave at Yorkshire as we thunder through) to Granddaughters 10th birthday party (which is why I am up at this ungodly hour ironing shirts) - trouble is as far as I am aware, GNER do not have a Recce Unit unless I venture into the even darker side of "What If".
Don't you dare - any of you!!
Yes Colin, SMW is going to be very interesting, especially as its my first. Sanguin - did you get the pix or did your brand new sooper-dooper iMac (you are right, they are good) refuse to take anything from a common PC?

Dennis, the email arrived with attachments (nice pictures and your future info on Saudi Hunters should be spread far and wide) but the 'notepad' bit only appeared on my steam driven pc. My thanks. As to the iMac it is very whizzy, but most things are after my rotary engined pc which struggled to run Windows 98. In its day it was pretty pedestrian with Windows 3.1 so I have been straining it for the last few years-now it is due for an honourable retirement in a special needs school. If I couldn't break it then hopefully it will be kid-proof for a few months. Sadly the railways of Scotland are little known to me, but Irish narrow gauge....that's where my main interest lies, mainly out of sheer perversity! I await news of the AFV selected by Colin....has anybody out there seen a wingless box headed his way? Surely there must be some efficient recce forces keeping an eye out?
