I would like to propose a new SIG. The proposed SIG would be named the 'Emergency Services and Recovery' SIG, initially concentrating on vehicles ... An Emergency vehicle is any vehicle that is designated and authorized to respond to an emergency. These vehicles are usually operated by designated agencies, often part of the government, but also run by charities, non-governmental organizations and some commercial companies. A Recovery vehicle (also called a wrecker, breakdown truck, tow truck, breakdown lorry or even a specialised low loader), is a vehicle used to transport vehicles to another location, or to recover vehicles which are no longer on a derivable surface. Vehicle (Latin: vehiculum) is a mechanical means of conveyance, a carriage or transport. Most often they are manufactured (e.g, cars, hgv, motorcycles, trains, ships, boats, and aircraft. ... but also including other genres' as follows ... Road Vehicles ~ (civilian / military) fire, police, ambulance, coastguard and other rescue organisations. Aviation ~ (civilian / military) Search and Rescue. Marine ~ RNLI and other rescue organisations (civilian / military). Interested? ... please contact me via email including your name and membership number: ipmsukwebmaster@btopenworld.com

OK Folks, where are we on this? I've decided to limit the proposal for the SIG to road going services, which are the usual fire, police, ambulance and then the auxiliary services such as coast guard, RNLI and the mountain rescue groups. If anyone wishes to form such a group, please indicate your interest and contact me via email or PM by the end of March.

OK folks, as it stands at the moment, I believe we have enough prospective members to start a SIG. However, as this portion of the hobby has approximately 5% of the total market, I believe we have to work harder to promote the hobby. Therefore, I've contacted Chris Cooper, leader of the truck SIG and offered my support and suggested that we join forces to build a first class SIG, no matter what the genre', be it civilian, military or emergency vehicles. I'll keep you all informed of the situation and value your comments.

What about a "Large and Emergency Vehicles" SIG?
Could incorporate trucks, buses, fire engines etc allin one group?

The way I've come to look at it Brian is that a truck, is a truck, is a truck. Now I'd love to be able to take emergency vehicle modelling to the n'th degree, but I don't think the interest is there (apart from you and me and possibly Fatty). I love to model fire trucks, especially conversions, but is there a need for a separate SIG? ... I thought there was but apparently not considering the replies I've had, but if those of us interested in truck modelling all promote the hobby via the Truck SIG, we could have a superb display every year at SMW and at some of the other events throughout the year such as Gaydon.

Just a little input from me. I have been reading a lot of threads recently (can't count penguins in the dark) and at the moment it looks as though we (as in IPMS-UK) are becoming very fragmented with the number of new SIGS being formed at the moment. One of the problems I was told of from SMW '09 was that if every SIG had wanted table space ,there just wasn't that amount of space available and if the current rise in new SIGS continue where will we be by SMW'10. I do like the idea of this sig, and possibly being run alongside the Truck SIG is a good idea but why not class it as 'Land based rescue services' This would then cover all genre of the models you are promoting within the hobby. I also know that the members promoting this SIG can quite easily fill any table space allocated. But as a freind who visited Telford last year said to me it's all well and good having some groups who have a diversity of models on a display completely filling their space, but then next to them is a table with just 3 models looking lost on the table. Would it possibly be worth some other SIGS working together and coming under a commom genre for some displays, it could create more interesting displays for people. I'll now stand back and wait for someone to send a penguin assasin after me.

.. Would it possibly be worth some other SIGS working together and coming under a common genre for some displays, it could create more interesting displays for people. Pat your point is reasonable. That was my reasoning behind not pushing for a separate SIG to deal with emergency vehicles, it makes sense to join forces with the truck SIG and have a varied display. Several years ago before the Truck SIG was resurrected, there used to be the 'Trucks and Emergency Vehicles' SIG which was reasonably popular showing at all the major events with a large display at SMW.

I feel that because we only have a small interest compared to aircraft and military modelling we should try and stick together. As you say Nick, a truck is a truck, unless its a crane !! Would be great to have a crane SIG, but I know this is never going to happen so I am quite happy being in the truck SIG.

I have made my own position clear here. While wreckers are already welcome as trucks, most other emergency vehicles are not. Police cars? Ambulances? Fire engines may be made by Scania, but are not really intended as cargo carriers.
We don't do so bad, if we were the fly boys, we'd have Volvo F10 SIG, Scania 143 SIG etc etc. Renault Magnum in Italian service SIG anyone?
I do not wish the SIG to be diluted in such a way, (I wasn't initially happy with military trucks lol) but in the interests of democracy I have solicited thoughts from the SIG membership.
So far on the replies I have 2 for and 2 against.

So if I read that correctly Chris, what you're saying is that wreckers are OK to be included but fire trucks, which are HGV's in their own right, some of the most common vehicles being 10 tons GVW and the high rise rescue platforms and ladders are in the 20 ton range would not be welcome in the SIG?

Come on guys I have to draw a line somewhere. The top one is hardly a heavy wrecker. And I did go for the green ones in the end, I just didn't want a display full of them.
