Chris, not a problem, although I feel you've limited your display possibilities. The original idea, as the thread suggests was to form an Emergency Vehicle SIG, but as several of the modellers on here who have voiced an interest in the SIG build heavy vehicles, it made sense to me at least to attempt to join forces with you promoting the truck modelling portion of the hobby and not diluting it with another SIG. Just a bit of clarification then, as the 'Truck' SIG Leader, can you tell the truck modellers on here what type of heavy vehicle models you would, or would not feel appropriate to be displayed on your stand?

I have just replied to Chris as a 'for', at least in the principal that truck variants of emergency vehicles be allowed, although I don't know where that would leave police cars etc, though is there a huge call for a SIG for those? The main thing for me is the promotion of vehicle modelling which as has been stated many times is a minority within the hobby. Surely at modelling shows, which I think is where the SIGs have most impact, the greater interest shown by the paying public in a SIG means a bigger chance of them 'joining in', either by building a model or hopefully joining the IPMS and relevant SIG. As a model builder rather than truck builder (another thread altogether ), if I was visiting a model show and saw any truck based fire appliance on a truck SIG stand, I wouldn't think 'what's that doing there!' and I think the majority of visitors would feel the same - 'that's a nice model' (hopefully ;D)

There is an option that we have. The 'Beyond the Box' SIG was established in order to explore builds which are a little different than a straight forward OOB build. I know we've been synonymous with Wallace & Gromit ever since we started the SIG, it's been a tremendous amount of fun but the kits are becoming hard to find and maybe it's time to bend the SIG slightly and look at building other genre's, but including transport subjects which don't seem to fall within the Truck SIG remit. This particular option would also open up the possibility of building aviation, nautical and other subjects such as Sci-Fi.

That does sound an interesting proposition, Nick. Maybe anything that isn't a straight tractor/trailer combination would be better suited to Beyond the Box?
I don't want to fall out with anyone, but I do think that the apparent restriction of what is and isn't 'allowable' within the Truck SIG are too limited.

Brian, not to worry, it's a hobby and a hobby should be fun, and I think the proposed SIG rejig maybe the best way to go. I'll iron out the details with Fatty and report back after I've spoken to Rob Monfea.

Hmm, I agree Nick, it should be fun. I'm presuming the details you are thrashing out with Paul include what constitutes not 'Out of the box' as there are many conversions which may qualify for either SIG (trucks that is) so is there a risk of diluting the truck SIG? Oh well, time will tell

Andrew, when Paul and I and a couple of others first discussed starting the 'Beyond the Box' SIG, we named it purposely so that it could be turned toward any modelling genre'. I think the Wallace & Gromit idea sort of snowballed out of control and we just kept the momentum going. However, the whole idea of the SIG is to showcase what can be done with a standard kit when a little imagination and technique are involved. With that in mind, I think we'll still have a spot of fun with silly builds. However, converting trucks into emergency vehicles is still building 'Beyond the Box' and the SIG will be able to bend in any direction. I've also been toying with the idea of building and converting other kits and they will also fall within the SIG theme. If the Truck SIG feel that vehicles other than cargo carriers have no place within the SIG, well, is it the end of the world, this is a hobby and it should be fun. But as someone who was one of the founder members' of the truck SIG when Chris was counting his initial members, I feel slightly bewildered that a model of a commercial HGV is recognised as a vehicle which falls within the Truck SIG remit, but an Operational Support Vehicle, also an HGV carrying commercial freight, albeit classed as emergency supplies is not accepted. In my view a truck, is a truck, is a truck. Now then, I have a Russian book which details how some of the missile launchers from the years of the cold war have been turned into fire trucks, there's a build there somewhere, and in the process, we'll turn green trucks into red ones.
