It seems next year may well be 1:48 Spitfire Heaven: just found out about a forthcoming PR XI: www.hannants.co.uk/product/AZM48047 Update on December 5th 2013 - still not out, but I've found out a bit more. I've been told, although I don't have first-hand knowledge, that it's the ICM IX with some resin conversion parts. I cannot say one way or the other. Now excuse me while I go and scrape this egg off my face.

Seems that there's a Trumpeter A-3 Skywarrior on the way. No idea if it will have any recce versions in the box, but there must be the potential for an RA-3 or EA-3. www.hannants.co.uk/product/TU02868

HobbyBoss (AKA HobbyBooBoo) have shown a test shot of a future 1/48 RF-80 at the 2013 Shizouka Hobby Show. www.1999.co.jp/eng/image/10224588b2/30/2Looking forward to that, especially if they don't screw it up. Larry

It's just as well the AZ 1:48 PRXI which I mentioned above did not materialize: we are promised a development of Eduard's excellent Mk IX kit. This is indicated in the August 2013 Eduard Info magazine. See the editorial on P4, 2nd column, last sentence: "Right now, the design of the Spitfire Mk.VIII is underway, and a part of this development process will extend to the photo reconnaissance Mk.XI... " (my italics). My prediction of the AZ was based on seeing a "Future Releases" entry on Hannants website, this is straight from the proverbial horse's mouth, so here's hoping.

A bit of a mixed bag from Airfix this year on the Recce front. The much-speculated-about Swift FR5 turns out to be 1:72 scale, so some disappointment at SIG HQ, tempered by the thought that the Spitfire PRXIX was issued in 1:72 first iirc. There's also a re-issue of the Mosquito B/PR XVI in 1:48 and a new-tol Spitfire Vb - why not a Vc we ask, but no doubt Airfix have their reasons. In 1:72 scale, apart from the Swift, nothing specifically reconnaissance-oriented, but there are a Spitfire IX re-issue, a couple of new Blenheims and a Do 17Z which had recce variants/uses in some guise. Nothing new for recce on the Military vehicles front - how about a Humber or Daimler armoured car sometime Airfix? www.airfix.com/shop/new-for-2014/

Possibly old news as far as the kit is concerned, but at the Cosford show I picked up a Hobby Boss 1:48 Me 262 A-1a/U3. In the box it looks a nice kit, with the option of open camera bays complete with cameras; engraved surface detail; and a nice touch, a metal nosewheel bay to provide ballast. Two marking options with basically "blotchy" or "squiggly" camouflage (Luftwaffe experten please excuse the terms). I may even think to take a few WIP photos.

A couple of new 1/48 recce items recently released by L'Arsenal. First is the Raphael radar reconnaissance pod: www.larsenal.com/catalogue/index.php?id_page=6&id_article=1559&ars681417669=ars681417669Next is the CRM 280 reconnaissance container for Super Etendard. I hvae REALLY been waiting for this one, as I wasn't sure of the exact shaope, to try to scratch-build one. www.larsenal.com/catalogue/index.php?id_page=6&id_article=1618&ars681417669=ars681417669Then there is the RP-35P reconnaissance tank for Mirage F-1CR: www.larsenal.com/catalogue/index.php?id_page=6&id_article=1649&ars681417669=ars681417669Also, there is the ASTAC pod and ALKAN 910B pylon. This pod is available in Hasegawa's 1/48 RF-4EJ kits, but they are hard to get. www.larsenal.com/catalogue/index.php?id_page=6&id_article=1651&ars681417669=ars681417669Finally, an item that is not strictly recce, but is used on the Tornado GR.4/4A, the TERMA AIRCM pod for Tornado GR.4: www.larsenal.com/catalogue/index.php?id_page=6&id_article=1646&ars681417669=ars6814176692 of the items are also available in 1/72 scale, namely the ASTAC tactical reconnaissance pod, and the RP 35P photo reconnaissance pod for Mirage F-1CR: www.larsenal.com/catalogue/index.php?id_page=6&id_article=1620&ars681417669=ars681417669www.larsenal.com/catalogue/index.php?id_page=6&id_article=1658&ars681417669=ars681417669Some really COOL stuff from L'Arsenal, and now that there is also a L'Arsenal USA online shop, I can get them cheaper on this side of the "pond". www.larsenal-usa.com/store/index.phpLarry Engesath
