We've seen the Emhar Bedford kits and a couple of built conversions (nice one Fatty), there have been several mentions of the kits and possible conversions elsewhere on this forum, one of the conversions mentioned was the wartime Bedford articulated unit and the Queen Mary Trailer. Looking at the cab of the Emhar kit, it's not too dissimilar to the wartime version, apart from the bonnet, engine sides and front. So, if a resin conversion kit were available, would truck modellers be interested?
There's a possibility that a resin front end conversion for the Emhar Bedford could be made available, it would include bonnet, sides, front, grill, mud guards and crash bar. A set of wartime split rims would also be a possibility. The conversion possibilities using this conversion set would be endless, allowing modellers to produce not only wartime vehicles in 1/24, but those vehicles which were taken into civilian use.
The conversion would be mastered by a pattern maker who has produced several accurate patterns in 1/35 for a well known military vehicle model company. Would there be a market for such a conversion in 1/24? This is your chance to have a kit produced which may be the start of a range of conversions in 1/24. So, would you buy a conversion kit for the Emhar Bedford if it was accurate and reasonably priced?

Certainly would, the Emhar kit was great to build and would love to have a go at a miltiary conversion.

Cheers Paul, I'll let you have further details once I've done a little more research.

I'm sure there is a market out there Nick. However, I did hear at SMW there was a degree of 'disappointment' that there weren't more completed kits on display. Maybe the conversions would help on that front, and the TMW group build should also help.

Unfortunately, we can't tell modellers what to build. It would be good to know just how many of the Emhar kits sold, maybe Ted could comment?
Anyway, the proposed conversion may or may not lead to other projects, all dependent on sales. But consider these ...
Scammell coupling (chassis and trailer components) ... Scammell trailer ... Military pattern wheels ... Cab conversion including hip ring ... Soft top cab conversion ...
... just some of the projects which would enrich the Emhar kit and allow the modeller to produce any one of many vehicles spanning over 30 years of service.

I spoke at length to Mr Pocketbond (who I vaguely know from a mutual friend in the non modelling scene, small world eh) who indicated that sales had been quite good which I considered a little surprising after what I'd heard from retailers. I'm glad though.
I also mentioned the group build to him.

I am glad Pocketbond are positive, may bode well for future projects ;D I did notice a pile of the kits on the Pocket bond stand but no prices.......

Hi Nick
It would be great to see some AM parts for the Bedford become available. Lots of mileage in the Ehmar kit and it would be good to see it run on and on.

I'm working on it Nige. I've found a book I bought some years ago with details of the Bedford S' series, but the bonus is that the book also includes the M' and O' series chassis drawings and a shot of the Scammell landing legs. I'll keep you all informed of the progress.

Negotiations for the pattern of the aftermarket military front end for the Emhar Bedford are now underway, I'll keep you all informed of the progress. I'll be at RAF Hendon on Sunday December 8th, and I've got permission to photograph the Scammell Mechanical Horse, and I'm taking a tape measure ...

Hi Nick
Looking forward to hearing your progress on the parts. Have you made a start on your own Queen Mary trailer and cab yet?
It would be good to see how it is getting on.

Nige Nige, the Queen Mary trailer will have to wait for a little while I'm afraid, I have a feeling Ted Taylor will have built one before I can get started on mine. However, the Bedford OX tractor unit, one of the vehicles which pulled it is a viable project. Once the cab is produced, all that's required is the Scammell Coupling, as previously mentioned, I have a plan and a nice man who may be working on it just as soon as I get him the information to him.

Of course, I did mention it might be nice to see how 'the nice man' made the parts for kits as an article in the mag. Would this be possible?? ;D ;D

Just to keep you all informed of what's going on in the background. First of all, I've been asked who I have in mind to master the patterns, well, it's Brian Fawcett. For those of you who know the Accurate Armour range of military vehicles, Brian has produced the masters for several models including the Scammell Tank Transporter, Gun Tractor and Wrecker. I've known Brian for several years and we started the Derby & District model Club together in Cromford in the early 90's.
So why produce aftermarket parts for the Emhar Bedford and why now when I should be enjoying retirement?
The answer is simple, I love that era of transport and the kits I want to build are not produced in a scale that I feel comfortable with ... 1/24. Brian is an excellent modeller and pattern maker, he's also someone I trust and he's a very patient teacher. I won't be handing the whole project over to Brian, I'm about to become his apprentice.
Brian and I are still putting together the information required to produce an accurate kit of a Bedford OY Military Cab. There are other projects aligned to the Bedford OY including military pattern wheels and tyres, a hip ring and cover for the cab and of course, the Scammell Coupling. I'll keep you all informed of the progress.
