As I said earlier, here's some progress pics. The hull has been painted using Tamiya's X4 blue, X7 red, Citadel Chaos black and the deck is Tamiya XF24 dark grey. The interior is Valejo's Light grey. Still needs a couple more coats on the deck. Some of the painted parts. Note the interior framing in two shades of grey. this is because the interior is dark grey forward of the bridge door. I also added a couple of spotlights (why, I don't know) on the rear cabin bulkhead. These are there on the real thing but not on the kit. Trying to relate the kit parts to the actual thing is becoming a real pain. IAN

now got mine all sprayed up, and I,m starting to think that t could be a nice model after all. Ian, looking at your piccies, I have built mine slightly differently, I built the superstructure all in one piece, then sprayed it orange. After this I masked off the line for the blue at the bottom, was uite a painless exercise atualy, unlike the build! I,ll post some pictures of it when its finished. Decalling tomorrow..........watch this space.

Hi Snowdog.
Know what you mean about the superstructure. I only finished assembling it yesterday, what a pig. To be sprayed later this week I hope.

Hi all,
Lifeboat nowgetting the decals on. Starting to look something like. Have also got the two revell German lifeboats, which I have decided to build straight after. Will make a good comparison.
Good to know your a Tomcat fan Ian, are you in mourning for the great cats passing too? From the moment I saw this plane when I was 8 yrs old it was my favourite aircraft of all time. I,ve actually built over twenty of them, consecutively, all in different markings, looked awesome! We should start a Tomcat rememberance thread. What about doing a Tomcat group build for Telford? Homage to the greatest feline ever!!!!

Guys, I'm curious what problems you're having with the bridge/upper structure? He's some photos of mine, the only thing I did was give the mating surfaces a gentle sanding and taking care to line up the edges. The only filler I needed were on some sink marks on the bottom panels on the sides, a slight hairline join along the front and small blob on the upper surface.

Jonathan, the biggest problem is the lack of positive locators. Being a founder member of the BFMC (Big Fingered Modellers Club), my bits wobbled all over the place until some of the glue dried. Anyway, it's together now and has been hit with the big 'O'. Next comes the white trim etc etc. Ian

Ah, but just wait until you come to fitting the superstructure onto the deck following painting. Such is the tight tolerance of the fit that it is very difficult to get it to do so. I think I,ve made a bit of a cock up on mine, with the after structure coamings (where the crane is) being slightly out of line. To get mine to sit properly I,ve had to cut off all the locating lugs. It will be alright on the night though!!! I think the problems lie in that any reasonably experienced modeller can see the opportunity to lift the whole thing off to see the interior. Unfortunately I don,t think airfix have designed it with this in mind, or have just missed a trick in defining it on the instructions. Anyway, anyone reading this in the future has the benefit of our collective experience of it though.

Well here we are, two months work and it's time to add the painted superstructure. Much test fitting and sanding got to the almost perfect fit stage. So, I added the glue, placed the superstructure into it's spot and guess what? The flippin' thing exploded into two parts. So I thought, that does it. It's now in the bin and a mental note made to give 60p direct to the RNLI next time I even think about this kit. Alternatively, I would have a more enjoyable experience, accurising a Starfix Bf109! Anyway, so's as not to deprive any other masochist out there building this kit, I have corrected the colour shemes for the "Pride of the Humber" from photos I managed to find. these are given below. Good luck IAN initial scheme current scheme. IAN

I,ve seen the postings regarding the kit and even with the small niggles it is only one of the few kits available. I believe there is another kit of an earlier type for sale but i cannot recall the maker. Perhaps someone can say who it is and if it is any good or not? I am considering getting one of the Airfix kits as i believe it is of a specific boat i would like to model.

The Alanger lifeboat referred to above by ratch was I believe originally released by Frog in the 50s. As you can see lifeboat technology has moved on a lot since then!
Apart from that the only other kit of a vessel associated with maritime safety that I know of is the the South Goodwin Lightship, again originally by Frog, but re-issued by Revell and eastern european companies.
