ha, ha, you wee timorous beasties!
I mixed the paint for my airbrush and then found that my compressor has packed up! Only used the damned thing a few times!
I ended up using a Tamiya Light Olive rattle can for the trailer and then adding a very light coat to the canvas, before getting out the Tamiya desert weathering "make-up" box and using the light sand to tone down the canvas and highlight the edges and bumps...
More to follow....

Nige,
Probably won't add the black camoflage but haven't finally decided yet. I'm quite pleased with the way the tarp is looking (more by luck than anything else) and will try to get some better photos on the forum tomorrow..
Shiny nuts rule...

Hi Steve Nicely done, and not overdone either. What are you using for your lenses, and if bought, can you put some details of the sizes and product numbers, as you seem to have got the proportions just right. I will look up your shackles as well as I am sure I will need a few of those too !!!!!!!!!!!! Nothing doing on the tyres so far, I take it ?? No suggestions from any of the other forums ? What is next on the workbench in the meantime, or are you just going to finish your drawings before xmas ? Nige

Hi Nige,
The lenses (little-lenses) are from little-cars.com and are available in clear, amber and red (as well as blue, green and a number of other colours I think). I've used 4.0mm for the clear front lenses and 3.5mm for the red and amber at the back and sides. They are £2.50 for a pack of 8 or 10 (depending on size).
The shackles are from RB Model (see earlier in this topic for part number) and come in packs of 4, with separate shackle pins (each of which are drilled for a split pin!).
I've ordered a 1/2 ton trailer from Howard and will see about using wheels and tyres from that, as they are the closest I've come across so far. He's also got an unused master that is surplus to requirements that I will use as the spare after a bit of surgery...
I will probably get on with the 4 tonner build over Christmas, but I will try to make time to complete the drawings of the trailer whilst it is still fresh I my head.
Cheers
Steve

Nige,
Just realised that the part numbers for the RB Model shackles are in a different post. The product code is 103 74A. They also do some slightly bigger ones in the same shape (103 96A).

Been quiet for a while, trying to come up with a solution to my missing wheels. I've tried a set from Howard at KFS for his 1/2 ton trailer ( beautiful quality), but they are just too small for the 1.75 tonne trailer. However, it now means that I can add the KFS trailer to my stash....
I've found a one man band on the South coast that can produce a .STL 3D CAD file (whatever that is, but apparently required for prototyping) for the wheels and tyres, and a company just up the road who will "3D print" the CAD file in various plastics in 16 micron layers, so that the surface is smooth and all the detail is retained. I was planning to get 6 or 7 sets produced initially (3 in a set - 2 runners and a spare), so if the quality is acceptable, I will offer a few of the spare sets to other forum members.
It doesn't feel to be in the true spirit of scratch building, but I'm truly struggling to find any other solution to my wheel problem...
Cheers Steve

Hi Steve
Let me know what the guy is charging and I can paypall you the moneys for say two sets of 3 if you can organise !!!! Hopefully it makes it more economic for you getting the prototyping done by sharing the costs with you !!!!!!!
When it comes to scratching there are limitations that need to be got over by whatever means !!!!!!! After all, it has to be fun building, not just a torturous trial by plastic !!!!!!!!!!!!!! ,,,,,,,,,,,,,, OR RESIN !!!!!!!!
Look forward to seeing what they can do !!!!!!!!!

Hi Nige,
I'll definitely keep you in the loop. I'm not looking to make anything out of the "wheels exercise"' just to cover a bit of the initial costs. I'm hoping that if the quality is good enough, and the price isn't crippling, that I may be able to use this route for getting the JCB 410M wheels and tyres produced, and any other unusual combinations that may come to mind....
Cheers Steve

The way I read this 3 D printing, the main cost and effort can be in getting the CAD produced. The items themselves I think are based on the amount of materials and time the printer is running to make up the items, so are almost calculated like photocopying paper, the ink and the paper itself !!!!!!!
Will be good to hear how you get on and how the people go about it !!!!! It will give me the gen on this from the perspective of stuff of interest to myself, rather than hearing about 1/35 scale items, aircraft bits or the like !!!!!!
It will be interesting to hear what they need from you, or what they can do themselves, so that if I have any similar items, I will have a better idea, and maybe contacts for the guy that can do the job !!!!
It seems to be the miracle product that we have all wish we could buy and be able to do ourselves !!!!!!!
MAYBE ONE DAY !!!!

I have a friend who bought a build it yourself 3D printer from the internet. He's producing better and better stuff all the time. Initial outlay was in the region of £500 IIRC.
The chassis is laser cut ply and the rest is almost plug and play. He tells me that its the jet size that's the key that and your ability to create CAD files.
