'Recon for Rommel' - highly recommended and worth every penny Bought a copy at Telford. Once I've finished scanning Harriers for the Harrier SIG, I'll be scanning the colour plates for Rolf together with other stuff he asked for at Telford (Vulcans etc).
Advice to the memshab - an excellent pressie for "the day"

My head is starting to hurt....
In my endeavour to identify a good source to model an E5 Trop Bf 109 (there was a couple) I managed to get a copy of the Osprey book 109 aces of the mediterreanean and N Africa. I know its not the ideal source for a recce variant but I looked through and there are some excellent photos and colour profiles. Anyhow as I flicked through I noticed a photo of an E4 Trop with an odd little fared bulge in the base of the fuselage about two ribs behind the cockpit. The caption stated that this was an E4 Trop recce version with a low oblique camera fitted. The ac was complete with wing mounted guns and belonged to Jg 23 a fighter sqn.
Seems to me that it was a fighting ac converted to recce role - I kow some 'fighter' ac were used as recce birds but that only involved the pilot using a handheld camera or his gun camera to take phots, I have not seen a 'conversion' like this, has anyone come across this or something similar?

Found this really interesting clip on you tude of German flyers making model aircraft (HS 126) and a section showing a camera being removed from a Ju 88 and the film processing - very cool www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYTJ8gBbUUIPaul

Hi Paul,
That little blister that you mention beneath the aft fuselage of the 109E was for the antenna of the Peil G IV homing device which was fitted to some 109Es.

Dave
Thanks for that. I have to say I hadn't seen anything like that faring before and was a little confused. I have managed to garner enough to begin the conversion for the E5 although the HS 126 is taking up my time at the moment - its a real nightmare.
Once again thanks for your insight.

Hello Paul,
Thanks for taking up the question - judging from my date there seem only some 23 having been built, Would love to know if some were also equipped with the camera fairing in the entrance door. Will be content if I can do any Z-3 with correct markings though.
Have not heard anything form Dave Wadman for some time - hope he is well and busy with his next book on recce....
Congrats on your Panzer-build !
cheers, Rolf

I have a number of sources at home and I seem to remember seeing pictures of a Z3 - I am away from home at the moment through work so hopefully this weekend ill source something and let you know.

Rolf Had a quick scan over the internet and found this and wondered if you have seen it: wp.scn.ru/en/ww2/b/325/78/0I know they are Finnish but under the 'Germany' section it does state taht the picture is a Z3 although it is attached to KG3 a bomber staffel. Like the Finnish markings though and a few seem to have the fairing under the cockpit too. Paul

Paul - many thks,
yes I knew the site but was a bit suspicious due to some contradictions in other parts - but the Finnish data is certainly worth following up - the model does not implicitly have to be Luftwaffe !
Nevertheless, if you find time I would be interested in possible data you have only available at home. No hurry, project on back burner until Valiant/Vulcan are tackled !
check private mail later.
Cheers, Rolf

Hello Paul.
Many thanks nevertheless - still some good additional pics of the Finnish Z-3's !
Maybe something else crops up until the next 2 in line are finished (what isn't going to be very soon....)
Got the pics of 88 C-6 and 215 ?
Regards & thks again, Rolf

Hello Paul & All. - re Do 17 Z-3
You need look no further - have found a fairly well documented Do 17 Z-1 from Westa in "Wekusta", stationed at Bad Zwischenahn and making a good companion to my Ju 88 D-5 from the same unit.
regards, Rolf
