I have a friend who bought a build it yourself 3D printer from the internet. He's producing better and better stuff all the time. Initial outlay was in the region of £500 IIRC.
The chassis is laser cut ply and the rest is almost plug and play. He tells me that its the jet size that's the key that and your ability to create CAD files.

I have somewhere in the stash an old Badger airbrush engraving kit that works in this manner.
I used to use it for removing running numbers from Hornby locos and running stock.
Sometime ago I tried to spray SNJ metal buffing powder through it and got some hit and miss results. When it works it is stunning when it doesn't its truly awful.
As a principle it works but I'd never use an expensive airbrush, those cheap as chips Revell external mix brushes would probably be ideal for it.
Best answer is suck it and see.
I look forward to seeing the results at Telford.

Don't worry about the photos, they're still head and shoulders better than some 'masterpieces' seen on the Forii.

If you mean the main wheel well covers then they were usually closed on the ground to prevent Foreign Object Damage whilst taxing. They opened as part of the retraction sequence.
If maintainance was required to the UC they could be manually opened.

It is surprising how old habits die hard. I kept hearing the winner of the Best of Show being referred to as 'National Champion'. In view of what was our old IPMS UK Nationals developing over the years into a truly remarkable international modelling event, maybe the title National Champion should quietly be dropped, and renamed Scale Modelworld Champion. It would be a bit more reflective of the new status of the event being the worlds largest model show and competition. . That is a valid point Noel. and personally i agree with what your saying about the best in show at SMW. watch this space for further developements!!! Ah but some of us still think of it as the Nats no matter the rebranding. Perhaps old habits and all that. THC

The problem with PE parts is that they have no 'body' being flat in section. I have seen radar scanners produced using thin rod as the dipoles instead of the etched parts as they look better. The rest is just choosing the right adhesive, rather than superglue try PVA or two part epoxy.

Actually the kits in question were by a small UK manufacturer called Halcyon Models. They are fetching stupid money now on E-Bay and the like. They also did a range of Aliens in various scale and film guises and a 1/1scale face hugger which is remarkably realistic if painted well.
Good luck but at least you know exactly what you're looking now.

I have the sister volume on the 917. If this is anything to go by then what you get is what it says on the box.
Pretty good photo repro, some useful captions and a decent text.
If you can get the Reynald Hezard books on the 956 and 962 you'll get a better chassis by chassis reference although there is no english language editions of either yet.
If you can get the French language editions then at least there is some English captioning.
I have both and the sister 917 edition, all three together make a proper reference.
Be prepared to pay lots of money for them, although if you go to LeMans next year you may find them cheaper on the book stalls there. Richard Middleton and I were amazed to each pick up the 956 volume for 20 Euros this year! The look on our faces when the nice young lady told us the price was apparently priceless!

Hi I'm about to court controversy here I'm sure but I was a bit disappointed to see that the 'best in show' award went to a sci-fi model. I thought that 'scale modelling' was all about reproducing miniature versions of things that actually exist(ed) in reality. To award the 'best in show' to a model that is a figment of somebody's imagination, and therefore who can say that it is inaccurate, seems to rather undermine those models that the builders have sweated blood to ensure are exact replicas. Don't get me wrong, the steam monobike thingy was a fantastic achievement, but a scale model? I don't think so. That has to be the most childish, puerile, rediculous statement I have EVER had the misfortune to read. This is the International PLASTIC Modellers Sociaty. Any model made of plastic has the right to win the award as best of show. We have sci fi SIGs, what if SIGS, are you seriously trying to tell me that those people who enjoy making those models don't have a right to enter the competion because they might win!!! If you thought "scale modelling was all about reproducing miniature versions of things that actually existed", then I'm afraid you are sadly mistaken. ALL modelling has to be a scale of some sort, even if that "scale is in the mind of the builder, it's still got to have scale. I suppose you think the Homer Simpson models on display weren't scale models, or the fantastic works of the Beyond The Box SIG weren't scale models. How rediculous. May we assume that he struck a nerve there then Mark. THC
